Bangladesh Institute of Marine Technology (BIMT) is a government level institute established in 1958 to meet the demand of local and overseas manpower in marine vessel operation, maintenance and fabrication of local and sea going ships. BIMT is playing a vital role in the development and improvement of water transport services of Bangladesh. This Institute is running two “Diploma in Engineering” courses along with four other trade courses related to Marine technology in order to develop skilled manpower in the water transport sector. The trainees are being employed both in inland water transport sector and in overseas employment. Duration of the Diploma in Engineering Courses are 4 years now. The other trade courses are of two years duration each. Employment rate of the passed out graduates from BIMT is more than 90% both locally and in overseas employment.

Ex-BIMT students in Singapore established the Diploma Marine Engineering Association Bangladesh, Singapore (DMEABS) in 2007. The organization has been registered under Home Ministry, Singapore.
The objects of the DMEABS are
3.1 To promote friendship, understanding and co-operation amongst the members.
3.2 To promote physical, cultural and general well-being of the members.
3.3 To promote opportunity for the exchange of ideas and views amongst the members.
3.4 To assist every way possible the development of alma mater.
3.5 In further once of the above objects, the society may organize programmes such as academic activities, Knowledge sharing and experience exchange, initiation of education programmes, training of teaching staff, Scientific and technological consultant, recreational and sports activities for the alumini.
